About the event

This event is part of a Continuing Civil Discourse Discussion Series with Braver Angels.

Braver Angels debates are not competitive, but provide a deep experience of civil discourse. Conducted in a light parliamentary style, they teach students to engage with each other respectfully around difficult, polarizing issues. Students think together, listen carefully, and allow themselves to be touched and even changed by each other’s ideas. Participants emerge with greater empathy and appreciation for diversity of thought.

Participants in this event include the University of Texas College of Liberal Arts, The School of Civic Leadership at the University of Texas, Atidna, Bridge Texas, and other invitees.

How it Works

Our  “Single Issue Fishbowl” exercise allows participants on either side of an issue to hear why the other side thinks their view is the better one. BUT that’s not all. Each side’s participants are also asked to consider uncertainties or doubts they have about the position they have taken.

With the help of a facilitator, each group (of 6-10 participants) will have the chance to respond to the following two questions about DOGE, while the other group, and observers, listen.

Question 1: Please briefly explain the reasons why you feel DOGE (The Department of Government Efficiency) is mostly good (or mostly bad) for the US.

Question 2: What doubts, uncertainties, or reservations do you have about your position?

You can sign up as a participant to speak in support of either:

(1) "DOGE is mostly good for the US"

(2) "DOGE is mostly bad for the US"

-or-

(3) An observer.

Refreshments will be provided and two $50 gift cards will be raffled to attendees at the close of the event.
